Kolkata, 2nd September, 2020: Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC), the multidisciplinary creativity centre for art & culture will be hosting a two-day conference ‘Women in Performance’ that aims to open up a space for exchange of thoughts, researches, experiments and practices regarding gender identity and politics of body in the performance spectrum. The conference will be streamed on zoom from 4th September to 5th September.
The 2 day annual conference of KCC aims to open up a space for exchange of thoughts, researches, experiments and practices regarding discourses about gender and body politics, performativity of body, evolution of language, agency and gaze along with the economic aspects related with performances of, about, by and for women, historiclly and in contemporary context. Invited Scholars and Practitioners will present their works about the subthemes – Body in Performance & Agency in Performance.
The conference opens on 4th September with the discussion on ‘Body in Performance’ opening with keynote speaker Lubna Marium, an eminent dancer, art director, researcher and cultural activist and she will be accompanied by Dr. Bishnupriya Dutt, Professor of Theatre and Performance studies, in the School of Arts and Aesthetics, JNU, Delhi, Dr. Urmimala Sarkar Munsi, Associate Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies, at the School of Arts and Aesthetics, at JNU, New Delhi, Dr. Trina Nileena Banerjee, Assistant Professor in Cultural Studies at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. The first session will be moderated by Meghna Bhardwaj, a Delhi-based dancer, trained in ballet, jazz, and contemporary dance techniques, she is currently teaching at the Department of Arts, and Performing Arts, Shiv Nadar University, Greater Noida. The topic of discussion will be “Body in Performance”.
On the second day of the conferene on 5th September the keynote speaker Dr. Ananya Chatterjea, Professor of dance at the University of Minnesota and artistic director of Ananya Dance Theatre, will share the panel with Dr. Anuradha Kapur, theatre-maker, professor and former director at the National School of Drama (NSD), Zuleikha Chaudhuri, theatre director and lighting designer based in Delhi, Dr. Urmimala Sarkar Munsi, will talk about “Agency in Performance” moderated by Dr. Trina Nileena Banerjee.
The Chairperson of Kolkata Centre for Creativity (KCC), Ms Richa Agarwal commented on this occassion , “Women in art have been faced with challenges due to gender biases in the mainstream art world. The 2-day conference is in collaboration with Shadhona- A Centre for Advancement of South-Asian Culture, Dhaka, Bangladesh, Ananya Dance Theatre, Minneapolis, USA, Sandbox Collective, Bangalore, India, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, India and Flame University, Pune, India.
